Experimental Study of Performance of Spark Ignition Engine with Gasoline and Natural Gas

author

Abstract:

The tests were carried out with the spark timing adjusted to the maximum brake torquetiming in various equivalence ratios and engine speeds for gasoline and natural gas operations. In thiswork, the lower heating value of gasoline is about 13.6% higher than that of natural gas. Based on theexperimental results, the natural gas operation causes an increase of about 6.2% brake special fuelconsumption, 22% water temperature difference between outlet and inlet engine, 3% exhaust valve seattemperature, 2.3% brake thermal efficiency and a decrease of around 20.1% maximum brake torque,6.8% exhaust gas temperature and 19% lubricating oil temperature when compared to gasolineoperation. The results also revealed that, over the entire range of engine speed and equivalence ratio, theexhaust gas temperature and the lubricating oil temperature for gasoline operation is higher than that ofnatural gas operation while the exhaust valve seat temperature for natural gas operation is higher.

Experimental Investigation of The Performance Response of A Spark Ignition Engine to Adding Natural Gas to Gasoline in Lean-Burn Condition

Considering the disadvantages of gasoline and natural gas as mono-fuel in SI engines has made the researchers to improve the performance and reduce the pollutant as the advantages of the application of dual fuel engines. On the other hand, lean-burn in engine may lead to the reduced pollutant. In the present study various mixtures of gasoline and natural gas with the gasoline as the dominant fu...

An Experimental Study on the Effects of Bioethanol-Unleaded Gasoline Blends on Engine Performance in a Spark Ignition Engine

In the present study, the effects of bioethanolunleaded gasoline blends on engine performance were investigated in a spark ignition engine. Fuel containing 100% ethanol (E100), fuel blend containing 40% bioethanol by volume (E40) and 100% unleaded gasoline (E0) were tested and the test results were compared. As the result of the study, it was found that the use of unleaded gasoline and bioethan...

Study Of Performance Parameters Of Single Cylinder Four Stroke Spark Ignition Engine Using Gasoline - Ethanol Blends

The transport systems are dependent on the fossil fuels especially liquid fuels and these fuels are depleting at much faster rate than production. The consumption of fossil fuels is very unstable and directly affects the economy of our country as we are importing it from other nations so this factor has urged us to find other alternatives to prolong the usage of petroleum. Thus, by using bio-fu...

Performance and Emission Characteristics of Spark Ignition Engine Fuelled with Ethanol and Methanol Gasoline Blended Fuels

Depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution has led researchers to anticipate the need to develop bio-fuels. Alcohols are an important category of bio-fuels. Methanol can be produced from coal, biomass or even natural gas with acceptable energy cost. Also, gasification of biomass can lead to methanol, mixed alcohols, and Fischer–Tropsch liquids (Chum and Overend, 2001). Ethanol is pro...

Simulation a Natural Gas Direct Injection Stratified Charge with Spark Ignition Engine

The purpose of present paper is simulation a direct injection stratified charge natural gas engine. The KIVA-3V code was used for gaseous fuel injection simulation. Compression and expansion stroke of engine cycle is simulated using KIVA-3V code. In cylinder fuel equivalence ratio distribution criterion is used for studying mesh independency. The results show that 550000 cells number is suff...

Experimental Study of Hydrogen Addition Impact on Emissions and Performance of a Natural Gas Fueled Engine

Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy carriers of the future with potential to reduce local as well as global warming. The main by-product of the combustion of hydrogen in air is water vapor and trace quantities of oxides of nitrogen. An experiment was conducted to study the impact of hydrogen/natural gas blends on performance, thermodynamic efficiency and exhaust gas emissions in ...
